Claude Code vs Aider

Updated 16 Oct 2026 · Facts from vendor pages · How we rank →

Who should pick which

Both live in the terminal, so the difference is the business model. Aider is free and open source (Apache-2.0). You plug in any model, including DeepSeek or a local one, and pay only your provider. Every change is a git commit you can undo. Claude Code is Anthropic's own agent, bundled into Claude plans from $17/month, built for longer autonomous runs across a repo. Pick Aider for cost control and model freedom. Pick Claude Code if you already pay for Claude and want the most capable agent from that vendor without wiring up API keys.
